ABISHEK

Ican still taste her blood on my lips.

I stand there, in the kitchen, the metallic taste staining my tongue, as I watch Kirsten rush away from me.

She disappears quickly into her bedroom and closes the door quietly behind her.

What did I just do? Why did that just happen?

I look down dazedly at the pot beneath me. I slowly turn down the heat, before the food burns completely.

And then my fingers go to my lips.

I can still taste her blood on my lips. I can still feel the pressure of her finger between my lips.

I slowly lift the pot off the warm plate and place it on the table.

This is what happens when you do things without thinking.

I close my eyes briefly. My face grows warm. All I can think, all I can see, is the look of shock on Kirsten’s face.

Now, her gasp, loud and shocked, echoes in my ears. The memory of it sends more heat rushing to my face.

Oh gods. What did I do?

My skin prickles uncomfortably. My palms have gone sweaty and my throat has gone dry.

And my heart. Dear gods, my heart.

My heart pounds so quickly, so painfully, so erratically, that I am not unconvinced that it won’t jump right out of my chest.

If it exploded inside me, I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

The food in the pot is still sizzling, though the heat has dropped off.

I shake my head violently, and move, as though I am walking through sludge, to put the pot back on the plate.

I continue to add ingredients and spices and herbs to the pot.

After ten minutes, Kirsten has not come back out of her room.

Do you blame her?

My lips tingle as if to remind me acutely of what I did.

I turn the meat and potatoes over in the pot, and add another dash of spice, before I finally remove the pot from the plate.

“I think it’s done,” I mutter to myself. Then I look up, indecisively, at Kirsten’s door.

I do not know what to do.

I have the urge to pace up and down, and hope that an answer falls into my lap.

Or maybe hit me in the face.

I look over at Kirsten’s door, and then over at the waiting food.

I swallow and walk quickly over to Kirsten’s door and knock on it loudly before I can change my mind.

“Uhm.” My voice wavers and I close my eyes briefly. “The food is done. If you’re hungry.”

I know she is hungry, but I have come to learn that Kirsten is stubborn. And I think I embarrassed her.

I lift my hand to knock again, but then I lower it, and turn away.

It’s up to her now. But I hope she comes out.

Kirsten does come out of the room a few minutes later. I swallow as she gives me a brief smile, though she doesn’t look me directly in the eye.

“This looks lovely, thank you,” she says when I hand her a plate.

What now? Do we talk about the stupid thing I did? Or do we pretend it didn’t happen?

Kirsten takes the lead and doesn’t acknowledge what happened.
